Meet Jessica

Jessica Lewis is the creator of Single Dope Black Chick. She’s been single since 2017 and recently took herself out of the dating game to get a better understanding of who she is as an individual. Jessica was used to being in long-term committed relationships, but after her last relationship there seemed to be a lull in her dating life. That lull allowed her to take an introspective look at herself. She needed to figure out what made her happy outside the company of a man. She needed to do some internal work to figure out her part in the failure of her last relationship and, most importantly, why she did not like being alone.

In early 2019, she set out to address these issues within herself and the larger context of the societal narrative she had ascribed to. Somehow she found herself feeling down because she didn’t have a man. After some soul searching, it dawned on her that she was not alone. There were other Black women dealing with those same feelings and emotions. All she had to do was look at her timeline on Facebook to see friends posting about being single, the difficulties of dating and why men aren’t doing this and that.

The final post that broke the camel’s back, was a girl asking if people would look at her funny if she went to the movies by herself. Jessica couldn’t believe her eyes. The only thing she could say to her is that she’d be the only one concerned about going to the movies alone. Everyone else would be enjoying their time just like she should. At that moment, she knew it was time to launch a platform to address singleness amongst women in the Black community and Single Dope Black Chick was born.
