Let's Celebrate Self-love

Michelle Obama recently sat down with Oprah Winfrey during her 2020 Vision stop at Barclays Center. When Oprah asked Michelle what has she learned in her 28 year relationship with Barack, Michelle said, “I’ve learned that Barack is not responsible for my happiness.” What a profound statement. So you’re telling me that not even your husband, your life’s partner, your best friend is responsible for your happiness. You are. How often do we put stock in other people making us happy. We think that what we’re longing for will be satisfied by companionship. Well, honey, you heard it here first. The only person responsible for your happiness is you.

With Valentine’s Day here and store shelves stocked with teddy bears, chocolates, roses and candy, you better make sure you love your self first. No man, or woman for that matter, can make you happy. If you bank on that you will always be disappointed. People are trying to sustain their own happiness. How can they ensure yours when they are trying to sustain theirs.

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for lovers. Let’s redefine what it means for us singles and celebrate together.

Join us for the official SDBC Galentine's Day Weekend:

Issa Rae’s new movie, The Photograph, is in theaters on Valentine's Day. In the movie, Issa plays a character named Mae. When her estranged mother passes away she finds a photograph tucked away in a safe-deposit box and soon finds herself delving into her mother's early life. That investigation leads to an unexpected romance with a rising journalist. Watch the trailer here.
